Warmest holidays greetings from all of us here at the Acres! It's hard to believe 2011 has finally come to an end, especially since it was the year Aussie Doodle Acres was born. It was a year fraught with global change and financial crisis, revolutions throughout the Middle East, the Occupy Movement and the looming threat of the Euro's disintegration... and through it all our canine companions were at our sides to help keep us sane and remind us of what's important. As we say goodbye to 2011 and prepare to usher in twenty-twelve, with it's questionable prophecy of Mayan armageddon, the importance of our animal loved ones couldn't be more near to our hearts. Given the year's events and our focus on service, we've chosen a few choice articles and sites to share as we look forward to 2012 and the new opportunities that await. We wish you and yours great joy, prosperity and success in the coming year. And dogs, of course! Contact Us if you're in need of the perfect K-9 companion!
Clearly the photo at left shows people, veterinarians in fact, helping a dog. What may not be so clear from the photo is how this dog, and the procedure taking place here, could potentially help in reducing the time it takes to diagnose and treat infections in both dogs and people in the near future. With the goal of reducing the amount of antibiotics used in treatment to prevent bacterial resistance to antibodies, Amy DeClue (at right in photo) "hopes to develop a portable bedside test that veterinarians could use to quickly test patients for infection and ultimately target a better cure." As you may know, or remember from last month's DogBlog post, all domesticated dogs can trace their heritage back to the supreme wild canine, the wolf. Fifteen years ago, Yellowstone National Park saw the reintroduction of the wolf to its fauna. In a new report from a study headed by researchers at Oregon State University, lead author William Ripple and his colleagues share the incredibly positive impact this has had on the park's ecosystem. Click on the photo at right to read the full article, and find out how balance has been restored to Yellowstone with the help of man's best friend's oldest and most beautiful ancestor.
Owning a dog, like most things in life, comes with its own unique set of responsibilities and rewards. Living in today's world as an eco-conscious individual also comes with responsibilities, some of which don't always seem to easily mesh with pet ownership. One prime example is the task of cleaning up after your dog on his daily walks or at the dog park. Responsible pet owners know that this albeit unpleasant job is absolutely a must, and generally keep an adequate supply of plastic "poop bags" on hand (literally). Responsible environmentalists, however, likely cringe at least a little bit every time they use a plastic bag for this purpose and have to throw it away, contributing to the tons of non-biodegradable material choking our landfills and threatening our natural habitats and animal life more and more each year. But now there's at least one solution leading the effort at bridging these two worlds - a company that makes 100% biodegradable poop bags, right here in the USA. In response to the financial and job troubles that have been our nation's reality for some time now, many potential solutions have been suggested by the president, by the Occupy protestors, by so-called economic experts. There is at least one effort currently in the news forefront, however, that seems pretty respectable and noteworthy to all of us here at the Acres. If you're a regular viewer of Diane Sawyer, surely you're already aware of the Made In America campaign. While it may be easy to find a new pet that is guaranteed made in America (all of the Aussie Doodle Acres dogs are!), most of the other items we purchase, both necessities and luxury items, pose more of a challenge. Often it is simply our lack of knowledge about where to find products made on our home soil that prevents us doing so. The Made In America campaign has begun addressing this problem, and aims to reestablish the strength and security of American jobs, and American products. Click on the image to read more and to find products made in your state and across our great nation. We hope you will support the effort whenever you can, as together we all do our part to help rebuild what has been broken for far too long.
